Union Street, or New Ground as it is now known, is a pioneering co-housing scheme especially for women over 50 located in Barnet, North London. The purpose built blocks of flats were built on what was previously St. Martha’s Convent and includes 25 residential dwellings, a communal lounge and kitchen hosting weekly meals, generous outdoor spaces consisting of landscaped courtyard and a large vegetable plot, all encouraging social interaction between the residents.

Union Street was a D&B project and the design utilised 5 linked two to three storey buildings set-out in an L-shape arrangement, typically of load bearing masonry wall construction founded on mass concrete footings on gravel supporting precast floors and steel framed roof.

The project has since won numerous awards including the Housing Design Award 2017, Building Award 2017 and the Sunday Times British House Award 2017 to name a few.
