5 Carlton House Terrace is a substantial Grade 1 Listed terraced property that sits on the south side of Carlton House Terrace. It retains much of the original fabric and was converted at some time in the past from a single residence to a club.
As part of the works, it was decided that the Servery would be relocated from the room alongside the Mall to the central internal room at first floor. The existing floor construction was cast iron primary beams with secondary timber beams and tertiary timber joists. Through investigations and assessments of the existing floor construction we determined that it was insufficient to support the weight of the new proposed partition and associated servery ceiling.
The structural proposal was to design an arrangement of steel beams and hanging columns to support the new servery ceiling and partition wall avoiding loading the existing floor. Only two of the existing walls were load-bearing and suitable for taking support off of. This led to the arrangement you can see in the images below, with a primary beam spanning between the perpendicular load-bearing walls, and another beam cantilevering out from the primary beam at 90°. Tertiary beams and hanging posts support the hinge locations of the curved doors and the timber partition generally as well as the ceiling joists. A 3D analytical model was created in Robot Structural Analysis, this enabled us to estimate the likely deflections and therefore provide slotted holes to accommodate this movement, in order to avoid loading the existing floor construction.
