On a site overlooking the settlement of Broadhaven on the western coast of Wales, Sleekstone House, an existing detached timber property in the style of a Norweigan Chalet was refurbished and extended with MBP responsible for the structural design.
The site is exposed to the elements and extreme environmental loads were to be considered when removing internal walls in the existing property and designing a bespoke timber moment frame. Careful consideration was given to the junction between the existing property and the new lower ground extension, which sat within the underlying rock on a concrete slab and perimeter walls formed from reinforced hollow concrete block work.
The materials used were to be readily available locally and easy to transport to the site and handle by a small number of labourers. The terrace formed on the roof to the new lower ground extension was formed with beam and blocks supported on primary steel beams. To execute elegant fixings for the glass balustrade to the terrace perimeter, the walls beneath were capped with a rectangular reinforced beam to resist balustrade loading and prevent undue deflection in extreme weather.
