The development at Messenger Court included the addition of a single storey of accommodation to an existing 1970s purpose-built block of flats.
The existing building is a plain, regular, block constructed of masonry walls supporting concrete floor slabs and a lightweight timber joisted flat roof.
The new construction is a lightweight timber frame, i.e. timber floor and roof joists supported by timber stud walls, and is raised off dwarf walls on the existing flat roof which are aligned with the loadbearing walls below. The existing block is served by two staircases which were extended in lightweight steel construction through the existing roof to the new flats
