Westminster
Under School was founded in 1943 and moved to its present site
in 1981. The school building started life as a hospital over
a hundred years ago and in the summer of 2000 a major building
and refurbishment programme started. The work was completed in
October 2001 in time for the new academic year.
A previous
masonry extension which housed a small hall, kitchen and staff
accommodation was replaced with a multi-storey steel frame supporting
long-span floor beams offering open and flexible internal space.
This new block provides two new classrooms, an information technology
room, an art suite on the first and second floors, and new kitchen
facilities.
The final
stage of the programme was the refurbishment of every classroom
and the science laboratories with extra space created for the
music department and new accommodation built on the existing
roof for a resident caretaker.
