We have
been involved in prefabricated construction techniques for a
number of years and using different materials. Examples include
designs in pre-cast concrete for both individual components and
whole building frames and development of prefabricated components
for aluminium overcladding systems. Recently we have been involved
in the development of factory produced systems using light gauge
cold formed steel components for social housing.
The system,
which has been developed in association with The Forge Company
and Ayrshire Metal, is for a system of prefabricated panels for
walls, floors and roofs. These are combined and integrated with
a highly insulated skin to produce an energy efficient, low cost
and environmentally low impact building. A number of projects
have been successfully completed including blocks of up to four
stories in height.
The system has also been successfully extended to include the
construction of modules fitted out in a factory and transported
and erected on site as complete units. In addition to these we
are exploring other related forms of construction. For example
a proposal which utilises a hybrid structure of a conventional
steel frame integrated with prefabricated structural panels and
modules for selected elements - bathrooms and kitchen modules.
Other examples are building studies that we have carried out,
again in association with The Forge Company, for the British
Airports Authority. These include prefabricated baggage handling
facilities and modular units for franchising at Stansted airport.
