The design team was selected as the winner of a limited competition with a brief to design accommodation for graduate students. Chancellors Court was the first of a phased development consisting of 32 rooms in three villas arranged around an orchard. The second phase, the Centenary Buildings, added a further 28 rooms and a student common room.

Each villa is served by dramatic free-form external staircases. The stairs which are curved in plan and elevation impose relatively large forces on the landing slabs which are formed in cast insitu reinforced concrete.

Elsewhere the construction is carefully designed around simple repetitive details. Loadbearing masonry walls and precast concrete floors are used generally with timber construction for the roof spaces.
