The disused
former Seamen's Hospital, once part of the Greenwich Hospital
complex, now forms part of a major new campus for The University
of Greenwich, the Maritime Greenwich Campus.
Following several feasibility studies to investigate potential
uses for the Dreadnought, the University of Greenwich chose to
convert the 18th century three-storey brick building to a library,
resource and computing facility for its students.
Central to the development is a new exposed-steel and glass structure
within the courtyards which covers the library entrance and a
cafeteria. A similarly glazed linkway provides communication
across the courtyards between the main wings on each floor level.
Within the building corridor walls have been removed and replaced
with steel sub-frames to provide larger, open reading rooms.
Extensive repairs were required to original timber floors throughout
the building to overcome damage caused by dry rot in recent years.
